Only an hour or so from Salobreña and the Costa Tropical, when winter storms arrive, life at the top of the Sierra Nevada mountains comes to a standstill - but why? - given good weather the views are spectacular.

The resort of Sierra Nevada is a sparse cluster of hotels and apartments at the base of the first series of lifts. It is modern with a hint of traditional charm, purpose-built and only here for skiing. It is not a traditionally Spanish enclave, nor does it appear in any sense Alpine; however, if you want to find snow in Southern Spain, Sierra Nevada is the place.
When snow comes it is light and dry because of the low humidity in Southern Spain. When it doesn’t snow, Sierra Nevada has one of Europe’s most advanced snowmaking systems.
What Sierra Nevada does exude is the intoxicating Spanish love of the good life. There are lively tapas bars, quaint shops and elegant hotels climbing the mountainside. No one who comes here forgets good food and spirited nightlife.
There are good hotels at very reasonable prices - don't expect to be fleeced as in many other Ski Resorts - Sierra Nevada is not like that.
Ther are good shops in the village renting and selling all the winter sports equipment and clothing you are likely to need.
